The light modulator uses pieces of wood in order to obstruct light in certain areas. The sides of the modulator contain a square opening to allow the light to shine through, and the top of the modulator contains a pattern.

 

This pattern on the top is inspired mostly by a Chinese pattern. There is also a piece of fabric under the pattern to diffuse the light, emphasizing the design of the top. The fabric also helps in focusing the light out of the squares on the side of the modulator.

 

The main concept of the light modulator is the use of squares. This is shown using a cube as the main structure of the modulator as well as the use of square shaped voids.
